留學生和台山人

十九世紀中葉以來,因為戰亂和貧窮,中國人被迫離鄉別井,移居美洲,其中台山人最先登陸,在漫長的歲月裡,台山人也是最多的。他們到達美洲時,正值美、加兩國百年排華的黑暗時代。台山人既無中國政治力量作為後盾,也毫無經濟力量。但他們毫不氣餒,以一往無前的精神,勇敢地克服困難,在北美創立了大大小小無數的中式餐館。當然,台山人也不是只會開餐館,也出了不少人才,例如美國駐華大使駱家輝,加拿大總督伍冰枝、參與南京保衛戰的林偉儔中將,臺灣財政部政務次長馬潤庠等等都是例子。 上世紀六十年代,香港很窮,以小型工廠和家庭式商業為經濟骨幹,故此並不須聘用受過教育的年青人。幸好正值越戰,美國政府支出大量軍費,美加經濟蓬勃,外國學生可以工讀,自供自給。我們在香港前途渺茫,不得不萬里飄蓬,隻身孤影往外國,尋求出路。 那時還未有亞洲經濟奇跡。香港和台灣學生,都是提著一個皮箱,身上帶著一筆小錢,有時小到幾十元,就遠渡重洋,開闢新天地。除了極少數例外,普遍都要養活自己,課餘工作賺錢交學費,好些還要寄錢回家償還借款。我們這輩苦學生,當時都是到台山人開的餐館打工。可以說是因為有了台山人,才孕育了我們這一代的專業人士,使北美華人經濟起飛,和社會地位大幅度提高。 作為第一代的華人專業人士,我們學成後,都要先到小市鎮工作,過了一段時期,才能再回到城市。我們把專業技能帶到農村,提高了農村的生活質素,把農村和城市的距離拉近。這可說是台山人對北美社會一個間接的貢獻。我們中的很多人,都從事科學研究,在科學的領域裡,有引人注目的重大成就。這也是台山人對北美另一個間接的貢獻。 當時的台山人,都以獎掖後學的態度對待我們這些留學生。雖偶然也有一些老闆較為苛刻,但這只是少數。很多同學,後來都做了台山人的女婿、媳婦。有一同學,暑假在一台山人開的餐館打工。老闆叫他第二年仍回來。第二年老闆對他說:「你跟我的女兒結婚吧。我把兩間餐館都給你。」這可說是奇遇。台山人對我們的友愛,使我們得到鼓舞,我們永遠不會忘記。幾十年過去了,每每想起台山友人,我們都表示衷心的感謝和尊敬。
